Members of the Servelec team attended the Children and Young People Now awards on 28 November at the Hurlingham Club in London. We joined colleagues across education, social care and youth services in celebration of those who strive day in, day out, to improve the lives of young people. The awards recognise the innovation and impact of service providers across the entire spectrum of services and ages, from birth right through to the onset of adulthood. Hosted by Dave Benson-Phillips, the evening was truly inspiring as we heard about the amazing projects from across the country and were treated to a great performance from ‘The Sick Year Sixes’.

We were proud to sponsor the Early Intervention award, recognising initiatives that enable early and effective intervention with children and young people at risk from problems such as poor health, dropping out of education, homelessness, crime or substance misuse, and prevent the transmission of poor outcomes from one generation to the next. The award, presented by Tej Chaggar, our Finance Strategy Director, was won by Bristol YMCA for the Bristol Wing project, an inspiring initiative that provides nine single bedrooms for homeless young people while they find longer-term accommodation. They’ve so far helped 47 young people into long-term housing and referring agencies report that young people tend to do better with YMCA Bristol than in other emergency accommodation.

We would like to congratulate all nominees and winners; a full list can be found on the Children and Young People Now website.

Our Social Care colleagues then attended the Social Worker of the Year awards on 29 November at the Royal London Lancaster Hotel. The awards, hosted by Lorraine Pascale, recognise and celebrate the achievements of social workers, promote social work and incentivise individuals and teams in the social work profession to achieve excellence. There are 16 categories in total across children’s and adult services for individual social workers and social work teams from across England.

Servelec sponsored the Adult Social Worker of the Year award, celebrating social workers who have made a difference through their outstanding work with adults. James Bouch, Sales Director, presented the award to Teresa Barrett from Livewell Southwest. Teresa is a much-loved social worker who has been in many roles over her 38-year career. In her current post as a hospital social worker, she has been instrumental in improving outcomes around hospital discharge and rehabilitation. This includes setting up an intergenerational project that involved local schoolchildren attending daily sessions with patients on physical rehab pathways. The judges described her as a dedicated social worker who “truly lives the values of social work”. You can read her full profile on the Social Worker of the Year website. Maxine Thurston, a social worker at Norfolk County Council, was awarded silver.
